Louil Silas Jr. conceived of Powell's biggest success, "You," which peaked at No. 2 on the R&B charts and No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Powell, the older brother of contemporary R&B singers Trina and Tamara, released four albums.

Jesse Powell's Professional and Private Life

Powell and his four siblings (two sisters and a brother) hail from Gary, Indiana. In 1993, a producer named Carl Roland in Kansas City heard about him through the family's participation in local talent competitions. Louis Silas, impressed by his performance, signed him to the Silas Records company.

After three years, he finished making his debut album. Powell, Sam Salter, and Laney Stewart co-wrote his debut single, "All I Need." A March 1996 release, it peaked at #32 on Billboard's R&B chart. His debut album, simply named, was released on March 12, 1996. It debuted at #35 on the R&B chart and #32 on the Heatseekers list, both on Billboard. The following release, a cover of Enchantment's "Gloria" from 1976, peaked at #51 on the R&B singles list.

Powell then started working on his second album. In 1998, the lead single, "I Wasn't with It," was released. He achieved his first top-ten single with this one (#85 US, #25 R&B). The day after its release on September 8, 1998, his second album, "Bout It," topped the Heatseekers album chart.

In February of 1999, the album's second single, "You," was released. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his most successful single to date. The record reached #15 on the R&B chart and #63 on the Billboard 200, earning gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Powell's debut single for the newly acquired MCA Records label, "If I," peaked at No. 58 on the R&B chart in the year 2000. JP, his third studio album, was released on March 27, 2001.

The R&B chart position it debuted at was #18, and on the Billboard 200, it debuted at #71. The album's second single, "Something in the Past," peaked at #67 on the R&B charts, thanks in part to Powell's promotion efforts.

He moved to Riviera Records in 2002 after leaving the previous label. Singles "By the Way" (#99 R&B) and "Touching It Tonight" (#85 R&B) helped promote his fourth studio album, Jesse, which was released on October 14, 2003.

Powell passed away on his 51st birthday, September 14, 2022, at his Los Angeles residence. Powell died of a heart attack at the young age of 51 in his Los Angeles residence. Records artists Trina Powell and Tamara Powell said their brother Jesse died at home in Los Angeles in a "peaceful" manner.

His sister, Tamara Powell, posted a heartfelt Instagram message asking for privacy as the family mourned and honored the singer's "everlasting legacy."

"Jesse had a deep appreciation for the people who listened to his songs and cheered him on throughout his career. To all of his friends and family, we say, "You were everything to him."
